reFine
reFine presents a new technique for performing selective sharpening, detail enhancement and edge aware smoothing useful for removing skin blemishes. Using high-quality edge preserving filtering, there are considerable speedups and memory savings over existing methods. Our approach decomposes the image into three detail layers: course, medium and fine. Each of the detail layers can be manipulated separately in various ways, for instance, sharpening or smoothing. Add to that Shadow, Midtone and Highlight adjustments and you have quick isolation of image features for selective filtering.

reFine Controls
- Detail > Course/Medium/Fine: The image is separated into three detail layers: course, medium and fine. Each of the detail layers can be manipulated separately in various ways, for instance, sharpening or smoothing. Increasing the values sharpen while decreasing the values smooth. The Course, Medium and Fine slider values can be ganged together so that they all move simultaneously.
- Selection > Shadows/Midtones/Highlights: Adjusts the amount of the detail adjustment in the shadow, midtone or highlight portions of the image.
Sharpening/Smoothing
- To create a sharpening effect, enable the Gang button (lock) and drag any one of the Course, Medium and Fine sliders to the right and they will all move simultaneously.
- To create a smoothing effect, enable the Gang button (lock) and drag any one of the Course, Medium and Fine sliders to the left and they will all move simultaneously.
Edge-Aware Smoothing (smoothing that retains detail)
- To create a selective smoothing effect, decrease the value of the Fine slider only. Only the fine details of the image are smoothed. This is useful for smoothing wrinkles and skin blemishes. If you are looking for additional smoothing, decrease the value of the Medium slider a bit as well.
